Jesus’ bouncers took up their positions to keep out the unworthy.  Parents were lining up to have their children experience a moment of blessing, yet the disciples were stopping them from encountering him.  They had become an impediment to Jesus’ ministry.

Of course, they thought they knew best.  They had Jesus’ best interest in mind. Surely, he should spend his time with those who might benefit him… or should we say them.  Not only did they keep them away, but they also dialed it up a notch, and were unkind as they spoke sternly.

Jesus as is par for the course corrects them and ups the ante.  These folks are not just worthy to be blessed but should be held up as an example of faith.

How often have we been the disciples of this story?  Acting as if we know who is in and who is out better than Jesus. Hospitality and welcome are buzz words of the church today, but we still function more like bouncers than hostesses.  So, this begs the questions, “Who in your community have you kept on the other side of the velvet rope? How should you invite them in to meet and be blessed by Jesus?”
