Authority… this text from Mark lays a lot of credence on Jesus being different because he has some form of authority others don’t.  In fact, that authority extends beyond the normal temporal plane and seems to hold sway in the heavenly realms since even spirits recognize it.

Our current times have placed another viewpoint on the role of authority.  The extremism of authoritarianism is one of the central themes of our political conversations today.  Authority is all about power and authoritarianism is about wielding ultimate authority often for one’s own gain.

Yet, time and time again we are reminded of why and how Jesus uses the power he has in this world.  Even in this text from Mark, the power is not for his own gain but to free the one with an unclean spirit. This is how we, as those who follow Jesus, should understand our responsibility and our use of authority.  We have a distinct responsibility to use our authority to advance the goals and kingdom of God.  Our own gain, influence and power are not the motivation for answering our call but rather to be those who work under the authority of the spirit to free the captives, befriend the friendless and love the world as God does.
